Self-reflected account of my simulated work experience and professional animation practice

This group project involved collaborating with Qin Su and Evelyn Liu from Year 2. My role was Monster Design, with the requirement to create a creature based on a bull or a sheep, potentially a chimera-like hybrid. The creature needed to be massive and imposing. This task provided a valuable opportunity for me to reflect on my growth as a character designer, particularly in the context of monster design. Prior to this task, my experience was predominantly focused on human character design, and this project challenged me to step outside my comfort zone and explore a new creative dimension.

The process began with extensive research into bull and sheep-based character designs, which informed the creation of a detailed styleboard. This foundational step helped me understand the anatomical and stylistic elements essential for the monster’s design. I then developed three silhouette concepts, each exploring different postures and forms. The first silhouette was chosen for its ability to effectively convey the creature’s massive and intimidating presence. Moving forward, I created the initial line art, defining the monster’s structure, musculature, and overall anatomy. Feedback from the directors led to a key revision: transforming the creature’s claws into hooves to better align with its bull-like characteristics. This adjustment highlighted the importance of aligning design choices with project requirements.

The color scheme was another critical aspect of the design process. Initially, I applied a warm palette, but after further feedback, I shifted to cooler tones and darkened the overall scheme to enhance the creature’s menacing appearance. This iterative process underscored the value of adaptability and receptiveness to feedback in achieving the desired outcome.

Reflecting on this project, I recognize significant growth in my ability to communicate within a team, adapt designs based on feedback, and collaborate effectively across departments. These skills are essential for any character designer, and I am eager to apply them in future projects. This experience has not only expanded my technical expertise but also deepened my appreciation for the collaborative nature of creative work. I look forward to continuing my development as a character designer, embracing new challenges, and refining my craft.
